Agreed, but not a large one. I like the "mostly stock" look. Especially with the stock Willys/Rubicon wheels.

I pretty much hate everything (road legal) between ~400 and ~1000.

They're almost all too heavy and too slow,

My favorite bikes are big burly bikes like the Z1000, Vmax, Multistrada, etc. and...

It's design is old as fuck now and it wasn't great when it came out. It is definitely overdue for a redesign.

I would not have guessed that. But now that you mention it, the seat on the DRZ is much wider, making it harder to reach the ground.

I'm tall. I've never thought about these things before.

With that budget you could also try a dual-sport and put street oriented tires on it.

DRZ400 or maybe a DR650. The DR650 may be too tall though.

Dual-sports are easier and more forgiving to...
