That's an illegal weapon bro.
You're looking at 10 years in a federal prison.
You can't have a foregrip on a pistol unless registered as an AOW.
That weapon was manufactured as a rifle. According to the ATF once a rifle, always a rifle. You'd need to register it as an AOW if you want to put a barrel of less than 16" on it.

The gun wasn't necessarily manufactured as a rifle. He could have bought the 16" barrel and stock after the fact (I'd think this because the buttstock on the Cobray made carbines look nothing like the one pictured - a buddy of mine has one).
The other thing that is scary is that the ATF has recently changed their view on "once a rifle, always a rifle." It used to be that once you throw a 16" barrel and a butt stock on a "pistol" it would always be a rifle and could never be a pistol again. Now they're saying that a firearm manufactured as a pistol can go back and forth from pistol to rifle as many times as the owner wants as long as the owner never creates a NFA regulated weapon (SBR/AOW). The scary part is a police officer that may not know better pops you for constructive intent when you have it in rifle configuration and have the legal pistol barrel or you have it in pistol configuration and have either that rifle barrel with the foregrip or the buttstock (but not both) with you. The latter of those scenarios might even be enough for a solid conviction.
On top of all of that, the ATF is wishy washy as shit when it comes to this stuff and have changed rulings more than once. The entire area is really fucking cloudy.

He's definitely got AOW issues as long as that foregrip stays on the short barrel or the long barrel goes on the gun without putting the stock on or pulling the foregrip off.

Hmmmmm. Never seen one with that stock from the factory. Not saying I don't believe you, I just don't have any need for a weapon like this, so I don't pay much attention to them unless a friend or family member has one.
OP, did the gun come from the factory as a pistol or a rifle?
