Switching gears from a 4.10 to 4.56 on a front diff
Question for you off-roaders...
thinking about picking up a bronco, but the guy has it geared 4.56 in the rear and 4.10 in the front *making it not go into 4x4* The guy stated he just didn't have the time to take care of the front diff but had planned on it. My question is...how difficult is it to swap out the gears?? Could I, who has average mech skills, and a garage...knock this out? It's for a 1982 ford bronco :) Thanks in advance :) |
Re: Switching gears from a 4.10 to 4.56 on a front diff
Even as a average skilled mechanic it can be tricky. There are also special tools that are needed to do this. It can be done, t's just a expensive learning process if done wrong. This is one of those things that sometimes is just easier to take to someone that can do it. Better in the long run. Your gears can be covered under the manufacturer warranty and some techs give a service warranty.

Re: Switching gears from a 4.10 to 4.56 on a front diff
Yeah deff have them professionally done. You gotta have the right backlash. Basically too much slack or not enough will cause the gears to wear out or either break something when you torque on it. Its easy as can be pullin the ring and pinion out, but having it properly set up is the critical part.

Part wise what would I need to get? besides the gears?

New gears and a install kit prob wouldn't hurt + new lube.
