Default Prob with a 2002 Ford Explorer

I got a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS 4.0-liter SOHC 12-valve V6 AUTO Tranny 4x4, and recentlly my Check Cage light has been acting up, For some reason my fuel cauge goes down to zero even when I have gas in the car and then the check cauge sign pops up... its very random at times, right now the fuel cauge seems to be working fine but past couple weeks I've seen how much gas i have like every 2-3 days, the cauge works for about 5 min after starting the car and then it just goes down. Any ideas what this could be?? My guess is that that the fuel sensor is screwed up but who knows...

My service engine soon sign poped up about the same time the problem with the fuel cauge started, could be related to the fuel gauge maybe?? I dont really know that much about cars but all your help would be very appriciated.

I have an OBD - II code reader. the main problem is that you bought an 2002 Explorer, first year of the redesign so the kinks hadnt been worked out.

we had the same problem with one at oceana muffler and brake exept every light came on. gas guage stoped working etc, the whole cluster pretty much wentout exept all the lights. it ended up being some sensor on top the tranny. dought thats it but its something to look for. we couldnt get any codes out of it either.

we've had some probs with ford explorers and rangers too. same style of probs. never figured it out, but then again, never really gave a shit. best idea is to figure out how many miles on average you can get, safely, on a tank of gas. then have it checked out.

I would try an injector cleaner. My 04 Ranger gas gage has issues. I use the Chevron with Techron. For some reason it works fine when I use the injector cleaner every couple thousand miles.

If that does not work then I would do some searching on explorerforum.com
