A letter to Toyota and their response...
SubjectDiesel Tacoma Discussion
Toyota Customer Experience Customer (Jason McKimmey)07/29/2009 07:24 AM
Why doesn't Toyota offer a diesel Tacoma in the US? I understand that the EPA regulations are more strict here for diesels but have market studies been done to prove that it would not be a profitable venture? Everyone I have asked whether they were interested in a diesel small pickup were very interested in such a vehicle. I can only conclude that you guys think that the cost of meeting the EPA regulations on the diesel offered elsewhere in the Tacoma would not be recouped in sales of a US model diesel Tacoma
Thanks,
Jason McKimmey

Dear Mr. McKimmey,
Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
We appreciate your interest in Toyota.
We apologize; we do not currently have any announced plans to introduce a diesel-powered vehicle in the United States. We are, however, aware of consumer interest in this type of vehicle.
In 2008, Toyota announced a Hybrid and Clean Diesel Initiative at the Detroit Auto Show and pledged to offer clean-diesel vehicles soon, but with no specific date attached. With the current economic climate here in the U.S. and abroad, Toyota has had to re-evaluate our future plans, which has unfortunately resulted a shift away from introducing diesel Toyotas here.
Your feedback is appreciated; it is through communications such as yours that we become aware of our customers expectations and reactions. It also provides us with valuable insight when planning and developing future products and services to increase our customers' satisfaction.
If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to http://www.toyota.com/help/contactus.html contact us.
Sincerely,
Taryn Pepper

I'd be hella interested, a buddy of mine had one of the 80's diesel ford rangers and man that bitch was a stump puller, he still won't sell it to me.

Tundra production facilities are apparently fully ready to build hybrid and diesels, but its not a wise decision right now with the economy the way it is.

That wasn't my question though. I asked about a small/midsize diesel pickup. In Great Britian the ONLY engine that comes in the Hilux is a diesel.

Yeah, I don't see it happening. It would be awesome if it did but I just don't think it will. Occasionally you run across an old toyota diesel in the states but I think they came down from canada.
