Land Rovers?
 

Anybody have any experience with Land Rovers? I'm looking at a 2000 Discovery II, and just want to see if anybody gives a thumbs up or down. :)

I've been looking on those forums and been getting a lot of info, but I'd like to hear it from a different crowd.

I've got a 98 Range Rover and my buddy just picked up a 2002 RR last night, love those trucks.

His mom has a Disco II and completely neglected it, so it blew a head gasket. Other than that they never had any issues with that truck.

You should check out landroversonly.com I think is the site... anyway thats the name of the forum and its pretty dedicated to discoverys.

Discovery is the way to go. I have a 1997 (p38) range rover, I love it, but would never recommend it to anyone.

You plan on wheeling it? There was just a pretty big Land Rover meet down near Fort AP Hill.

Why would you not recommend it? I'm assuming the p38 isn't the disco? Yea I wanna wheel in it, but still use it as a daily, you know...nothing harsh, just a few trails and on the beach :)

Never did any maintenance, put the cheapest, lowest grade gas in it, ignored check engine lights... pretty much anything you can do to screw up any car lol

The P38 is the 95-2002 Range Rover chassis designation from LR.

Owning a P38 is a labor of love, and an expensive one. Replacing suspension airbags is fairly common, and even if you do it yourself will still cost you at least $600. A spring conversion will cost you the same and you dont have to continually replace them, but at that point you may as well have bought a Discovery in the first place. The engines are nothing special and have their own quirks. Also, the engine is even in some Discos.

I personally love my P38 and love the air suspension, all of the quirks and working on it. Its fairly easy to work on and the parts are affordable. I imagine that the Disco is the same way, but don't know from personal experience.

My experience has been along the same lines as mrpratts. Although, I don't know if I'd call them affordable :) LR Parts seem to be low quality in relation to their price tag. The p38 has a lot of extra bells and whistles that have their own unique problems.

Another problem is the scan tools needed for the p38s (and the mechanics inexperience w/ p38s). Discos are way more common, so you shouldn't run into those types of problems.

Luckily, for us Virginias, we have www.roverguy.com, which can get most (used) parts to you within a day or two.

A disco will make a great weekend wheeler/daily driver. Comfortable and capable w/ little modification. A small lift and the right tires will allow you to go almost anywhere.

You should hold out for a Defender 90. Hard to find but much cooler than a discovery.

the price tag on a Defender 90 is usually too steep for a weekend warrior to justify. Check out Rovertym for parts/info. Discos and LR's are pretty good vehicles, ive worked on a bunch over the years. 04/05 Discos are garbage in my opinion. Seen a lot of issues with them.
