DIY Bead Locks

I'm looking to buy a set of Bead Locks for my Sami. I am now running 15x8" soft 8 wheels. I'm looking to keep these steel wheels for when I go to mount the 34s.

Now my question is, does anyone have any "hands on" with the DIY style (do it yourself) Bead Locks? With the DIY, I've found most all the companies that sell this kind include the inner and outer rings, bolts. . . Most have the 24 bolt rings. As my Sami is disgustingly light there is no big need for 32 bolt BLs. IMO.

A friend of mine is a excellent welder / fabricator and we're both thinking about ordering a set. He would be installing the "kit" on my wheels for me so the install really isn't a biggie. I would just like to hear if any of you guys have experiences with them.

Suggestions, Opinions? Thanks!

Just to let you know, there is some debate about the legality of beadlocks, especially in VA. Technically, they are considered ILLEGAL by D.O.T. standards, but no one has reported anyone enforcing that. Police though could use the gray area to pull you over on excuses of improper equipment, so know what youre getting into.

As far as street legality goes, I could care less. This vehicle is not my DD. It will be strictly for trail use only. About the only time it would see the street would be to maybe drive it 30 seconds up the road to put gas in it. (Gas station is right across from my street.)

I maybe should have added that in my op.

I know a few guys who have done it. I also know of a few guys who will do it for you if you don't want to do it yourself.

Pretty cool seeing the process. I'm just undecided on the DIY or the whole wheel.

That just may be who I need to talk with about them. I would be saving some $ going with the DIY locks instead of just getting the whole wheel assembly but the time it would take..... I dunno. Decisions, Decisions. . . . .
