Re: Buying a Diesel......Need some pointers
i am also a huge fan of the 7.3 powerstrokes. i personally have a '99 that im about to do a tranny swap in (auto TO manual). if you havn't already, check my thread in this section...you'll see that i'm now on my 3rd automatic trans and it has failed me. like some of the other guys said, if you get one with an automatic, atleast consider saving $6k+ for a BTS trans. they build 'em bullet proof, to your specs, and stand by their product.
aside from the tranny, im a die-hard 7.3 guy. i've seen them with 300k miles or better on multiple occaisions. all diesels are generally going to last just as long as the other, but when they do fail, the repair costs are alot more than with gas engines.
and my .02 on the value....(like KBB and NADA.)....i personally think they are full of sh*t. if i'm going to buy a truck, i'd rather do like you're doing and ask opinions of people that are in them everyday and then make my own value. for example, my truck is only valued around $8k (somewhere near there i think). but i wouldn't take a penny less than 20k for it. when a new one costs upwards of $50k...and the fact that alot of people out there would rather have the 7.3 makes me feel like mine is more valuable than KBB says it is.
no matter what you decide, welcome to the diesel world, and trust me...you wont regret it.
good luck on your hunt.

Re: Buying a Diesel......Need some pointers
Picked my 6.0 with 60K on it in Florida. 13K out the door.
Its chipped, intake and exhaust (stacks). I have had zero problems.
BUT...i plan to stud it and EGR delete it because i want to run more boost. Dont hate on 6.0s. Info on Diesels is just like the news...all you ever hear is the bad.
