4runner for future value but if you can get a absolute steal on a xterra why not?

I like them both but I am biased and would have to choose the 4runner.

A few deciding points to consider. The xterra feels a bit underpowered while the 4runner has plenty of power and if you want more the trd superchargers are readily available.
Also the 4runner was available with a factory rear locker.

As far as what to look for... really just general stuff, leaks, frame rot, etc...

the Xterra holds value well... the V6 tends to produce more torque than the inline engines. As far as the TRD superchargers for the 4runner... The Xterra comes stock with a supercharger. The automatic transmissions can have issues with reverse if they are not maintained. The 5 speed transmissions are indestructable. The choice is yours in the end... but you might want to look at replacement parts... and check the price on regular maintenance.

both good trucks, but when 4 runners are cheaply lifted they tend to sag in the rear end. so if you plan on lifting it make sure you do it the right way!
