Default Transfering a newly bought car from Md to Va

I am planing on buying a car from a private owner in Maryland with as few trips as possible to look at it and get it home. I have never bought a car out of state before whats the best way to get it to Va the most legal way? Can I get tags without having the title in hand?
I need you positve input on how to go about this!
Thanks

Go to dmv and get a transfer paper. It is 5 bucks. You tape it to the rear window while driving back and you will be ok.But you must have your insurace on it before you drive it back.Got a car from jersey all the way to va without tags on it,just with the dmv paper in the back window.

I bought a car last year from a private owner in MD. Was a very easy process. I showed up at the owners house with check in hand. I gave him the check and he signed the title over to me. I drove the car home on his old tags with the promise that I would mail them back to him which I did. I then got the car inspected, then went to dmv with title in hand and $$ to pay dmv for new tags and such and that was it.
