Default Anyone with dealer's license?

I'm looking into getting one. Does anyone here have one or have intimate knowledge of what it takes to get one?

I've already read all the official stuff on the MVA/DMV websites for DC/MD/VA, but I've still got some questions.

I'd like to be able to get a dealer's license without actually having to maintain a real functioning dealership, as all my sales will be on eBay anyway and physical premises would be a waste. I know I'd probably at least have to maintain an office though.

Can anyone help me out with a little consulting? If I get good solid advice I can act on, there will likely be a little bonus in it for ya.

In VA, it's easy.... to sell cars.. just like 25 questions or whatever... I did it in less than 1.5 min and only missed one..... to run a dealership.. an additional test.. didn't have to take that one but my boss made me learn all the info anyway... most of it is on fines, regulations, and tags... (taxes too)... you can download all the info you need to memorize (I think it was 15-20 pgs) from the DMV, but don't stress about it... it's almost as insulting as the postal service exam... that should cover the barest of the basics... look it up with VAs DMV, if there are still any questions, PM and I can ask some friends who were in the business longer....

P.S. the total amount of dedicated space to selling cars is listed in the DMV info so that should work as a FAQs, and as I recall, you need at least 7 cars... but I may have misremembered... I know you don't even need a license to sell cars as a rep if you sell less than 5 a year. Sorry if this is a bit disjointed.. in a rush... but yeah.. pm if you need more, but that should get you started

I guess I will call the DMV and see if I can get a wholesaler's license or something.

I don't want to maintain physical premises, and I honestly don't want to have to guarantee that my inventory will pass inspection either, as I'll be selling a lot of classics and project cars, not minivans to soccer moms.

I might be best off getting licensed in DC so that all my sales are technically "out of state" and thus exempted from regs. It would mean that I couldn't sell in DC, but how many prospective buyers are really in DC anyway?

EDIT: If *anyone* here already has a dealer's license and wants to take me on as some sort of partner, wherein I'd be allowed to use the license to bid at auction and whatnot, I'd be interested in working something out. In addition to my giving anyone like that a cut of my business, I could probably also offer some management/analysis services, as I analyze car dealer financials for a living.

good luck! if you manage to become a wholesaler... keep us all in mind for some of the (husks of) cars you'll get a hold of for project cars.
