Shift fork anyone?

Hey guys I am in need of a little help here. Today I was on my way home from the gym and my 99 r6 missed a gear. Now I had this happen in the past but all I had to do was just shift one more time and it would be like nothing ever happened. It only happened twice before. But this morning it missed and missed and missed, until finally after 3rd gear I was shifting like 4 times into each gear all the way to 6. down shifting was not any problem until about 10 miles later with all the stop lights. I told my friend the problem and he mentioned something about shift forks. I am just wondering if thats it or is it the tranny. By the way the bike has 14k on it. Thanks for the help.

Have you changed your oil recently? I'd check out r6-forum.com and r6messagenet.com for possible threads.

shift fork is possible, but start with the easy stuff first. check and make sure the clutch is adjusted right, if so, check the shift pawl and shift star on the end of the shift drum. might be bent or just worn out. (i believe on an r6 they're behind the clutch basket, but don't quote me). if all is well, you're going to have to yank the motor to get to the trans and see what's up.

That gen R6 has a known issue with the spring on the shift star breaking and giving the EXACT symptoms you just described. Its a 4 dollar spring and is abut a 15 min job. They actually upgraded the 01-02's with a larger spring due to this issue, so when you buy one..they only come in the new 01-02 style. Part number 90506-13535-00 if you want to look it up on ronayers.com If thats not it...they also have a huge problem with the dogbones on 2nd gear wearing out and causing the gears to jump in and out, but that usually only affects 2nd gear on them.
