Treating a stop light like a stop sign is probably not exactly what the trooper was suggesting. No one would ever give you the thumbs up to stop at a red light, look both ways, and then proceed.

I like this law. There's got to be a reasonable amount of time you have to wait before proceeding, and hopefully people will abide by it. I, too, can see why it would be misused and cause more accidents though. It is Virginia, after all.. home of excellent drivers.

Whats to stop someone from claiming they waited instead of going through?

Nothing, unless there is a cop watching you.

My question is: What about red light cameras?

They won't be able to make out motorcycle plates regardless

I would be hella surprised if a front angle camera managed to make out the back of a bike. Especially when most bikers have the plate relocated to under the tail

In correct I have been told by Fairfax PD, Norfolk PD, VA Beach PD and whoever manages Manassas that it is legal to treat it like a stop sign but only at night when no other traffic is around.

Front angle? I got a red-light ticket and it was the rear of my car including the signal that I was running. Lucky for me the picture was of my car and I sailing through a green light- so it was dismissed.

Like so:

I'd Imagine the cameras would NOT take your picture. There's normally only one camera for each set of lanes, and the camera doesn't register people making right turns on red does it?

Anyway, I went looking for proof that way I could whip out the link on an officer (on cell phone) if I ever got stopped for running the light LEGALLY. It's posted all over but nothing looks legit. All Iv'e been able to find is that the bill is labeled as "HB 1981". Here's the best I could find incase any of you want the link as well:
