Default Motorcycle Learner's Permit

I got my permit last April but some things came up and didnt get a bike as expected so im trying to get one now but my learner's is about to expire on the 20th of next month does anyone know if i can just renew them or do i have to take the test over again. I got my g/f to call the dmv and they told her that there was some sort of mistake and my learner's should be good for 3 years instead of one but im not sure I havent had a chance to venture to my local dmv just wondering if anyone knows about this. Thanks in advance.

Nope, unless the law has changed recently. AFAIK, you can get one at 16.

motorcycle permits are only good for either 90 days or 120 days...i'm not sure which. not 3 years. you can renew it but you'd have to retake the written test.

the laws change its only good for 1 year and you do have to take the test over again.. its alot easier to get try and go take the road test and actually get you liscens... i think you can get a learner at 16 and 6 months but i dont think you can get your liscens until 18

i just went through all of this... i got my learners last year in january.. i went to finally take the test when i got my new bike this january .. it had expired by 1 day.. so i had to retake the written test and then proceed through the road course to get my M stamp also .. you can get your permit as long as you are old enough for a liscence(sp) if you are under 18 you have to hold the permit for 9months before you can get your M stmap if you are 19 or older you have to hold it for 30 days.

For realz? Damn, they must have changed things over these few years. Although I was focused on getting the M-class and not the permit. I thought it worked the same as the M-class, since the M is an endorsment of your regular drivers license. Are you saying you have to get a whole seperate permit to ride, or do they add the an M-permit endorsement to your license?

Thats why i said 3 years, i'll try looking it up though.

Motorcycle Learner's Permit
A motorcycle learner's permit allows you to learn to operate a motorcycle.

You must pass the motorcycle knowledge exam.
If you do not currently hold a valid learner's permit or driver's license, you must also pass the two-part driver's license knowledge exam.
If you are under age 19, you must hold a Virginia motorcycle learner's permit for at least 9 months.
You must wear an approved safety helmet.
You must wear eye and face protection.
You must be supervised by a person at least 21 years of age who is licensed to operate a motorcycle, alert and able to assist you and supervising from a separate accompanying motor vehicle.
No one, other than the operator, can be on the motorcycle.

**If you have to hold it for 9 months under age 19, then you must be able to hold it for much longer over 19, i would think.**
