Default Bike's monthy cost?

What do you guys spend monthly on your bikes? Finance, insurance, gas, oil ect.

Thinking about picking up a 600 to commute around the city up here. The subway keeps getting worst with delays. They just canceled 12 station repairs and raised the fare so its not getting any better.

Also how about long distance trips, say VB from NYC...do they get the best of you? This would be my first bike so i dunno. Thanks

ive done virginia beach to Queens a few times on my bike and id say it can be hell on your lower back and neck, but its not that bad i guess. you'll get there alot quicker . monthly cost isnt much for me it cost like 7 bucks to fill from empty and then it just depends on how much you ride. i usually get about 150 miles per tank depending on how hard i ride.

Default Re: Bike's monthy cost?

have a friend that routinely rides his 2004 gsxr 600 from richmond to NY and is about to ride to california and back... i've done a few 500-600 mile days on my gsxr's and felt like i could keep going

on my 1000 with some aggressive riding and speeding i get about 40 mpg, if you take it easy and do the speed limit you might be able to get 45+ mpg, i'd guess a 600 would do even better, also another advantage is my ride home from work is usually pretty heavy traffic and its alot easier to get in and out of cars on a bike

so monthly cost to own and ride my bike during the season i'd say...

payment(financed full amount plus extended warranty)- $220
insurance- $100
maintance(average of tires and oil changes since they are less than montly)- $100
gas- $50

so for me, $400-500 a month for a brand new 1000 while i'm financing it with really high insurance, if i keep it for 4 years after i've paid it off then that average cost would drop since i'd be making no payment... if your older and have reasonable insurance, and get a used bike for a less i'd say you could own and ride one regularly for less than $200 a month

Ok thats great info. Thanks alot!

I'm not really planning on doing much speeding or aggressive riding, i just wanna get around. Parking is a bitch and gas is high as hell. Plus i figured getting a beater would cost me a ton in repairs (plus parking and gas).

Then your bound to get leg cramps, back aches, and neck stress with it being your first bike. It takes a good amount of riding to break your body into riding. Most newbs will tell you that just there clutch hand gets tired a lot/stiff from all the extensive riding they first do. After that, things will get better, except for cramped legs. But thats no biggie, once you are used to riding in general, standing up on the pegs while riding is just as easy as it is on a bicycle, which can give your legs a good stretch. I dont think anyone can make it straight from one place to another without a break. You can easily do the traveling, but you will need to take a few breaks in between, otherwise you'll probably end up with a charlie-horse for years.
