A motorcyclist died on the way to the hospital after being hit by a car, Newport News police said.
It happened around 7:00 a.m. Monday on Jefferson Avenue at the Randolph Road intersection.
Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston says a Cadillac going north on Jefferson turned left and into the path of the southbound 2003 Yamaha motorcycle.
No one in the car was injured.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
He has been identified as Eben L. Hoggard, 27, of the first block of Stonewall Terrace in Hampton.
The driver of the car, Tremaine Knight, 30, faces charges of driving with a revoked operator's license and not having insurance. Police do not expect additional charges at this time.
According to police, Hoggard's speed and Knight's driver inattention contributed to the crash.
Thurston says traffic is getting congested and suggests drivers going south on Jefferson take Main Street to Warwick Blvd. to Center Avenue and then back onto Jefferson.
The area is expected to be closed until about 8:30 a.m.

RIP. Gawd dammit this is so saddening to hear about people losing lives on their bikes. A female coworker of mine is in the ICU because of an accident on her bike she had this passed weekend. You guys be careful on those things.
