Default Variable Geometry Turbo's

Ive been doing research on them. They seem pretty cool and very effective from what I have read. In addition very expensive. Because of the design turbo lag is almost completley removed. It uses a turbo controller to expand and contract the fins which are moved by exhaust gases. Who has delt w/ VG Turbos? I got this off a site.

In simple terms, the variable geometry technology helps the turbocharger to maximize and totally control the boost pressure over the widest range of engine operating speed as possible. By using an axially sliding ring nozzle that varies the velocity of the exhaust gasses entering the turbine housing, the constant alteration in the geometry of the turbo allows for the creation of a wide range of boost while controlling turbocharger shaft speed. This virtually eliminates turbo lag and improves power, fuel economy and noise levels.

gm uses them on their duramax diesels.

the fins expand/retract to increase/decrease speeds (boost #s)

pretty cool shit

I don't get it. I thought turbo lag had to do with the mass of the compressor. How does variable fins change the mass? Does it just keep it closer to center? I wouldn't think that would be enough to almost 'completely remove' turbo lag. The rest of the jargon is above me. Actually reading it again, it's altering the turbine side instead?

welcome to 1987. garrett made them for dodge on the VNT equipped shelby's. they had severe issues with sticking.

Isuzu uses them on the Duramax in the GM trucks, ford uses them on the 6.0 powerstroke, and Cat uses them on an application or two.

they are severely complex, lots of parts to fuck up and the control system is not the best IMO. great idea, but not practical for most uses.

not to mention a replacement unit for a powerstroke is about 1400 bucks wholesale.
