Default Ricmond/ Chesterfield Personal Property Tax - Vehicles.

I'm trying to figure out what the tax would be a couple different cars. Is there a set percent charged based on the amount of purchase? Is the blue book price of the car looked up and the tax based on that? You guys are always buying cars. Help me understand. I'm sure someone knows. I'm positive Chris, Terry, and a few others must have this down to an exact science.

If its old enough they just look at what you bought it for. I think its 94 and older if im not mistaken. But other wise I believe they look at blue book or something.

Over 20K you go into different tax bracket. About one third more.

I don't know how they do it but they taxed me on a value that is more than I bought it for from the dealer brand new.

You can go to the Treasurer's office and have them fix it...if you have a bill of sale or some other proof of what you paid.

In Chesterfield, the tax rate is $3.60 for every $100 of assessed value. They generally go by the NADA book value, but you can have them reassess your value if you have high mileage or some other factor that you feel entitles you to a lower assessment.

VA pays 75% of the first $20k, you are responsible for the remainder. If you are late, you are responsible for the full amount.

i bought two new cars, city of richmond charged tax on the invoice price paid. - that being said on one of the cars - a focus - had a 2 or 3k rebate.. but that was not factored into the FINAL/bottom line price paid. the city said they got their info from DMV when the dealer sent the info to them.
