Male black lemurs are very dark brown or black in colour, with tufted black fur around the ears. The female is very different with a rich golden brown/chestnut colour and white fur around the ears. Both have orange coloured eyes.

The habitat of the Black lemur is to the north-west tip of Madagascar and a few offshore islands. Living in groups averaging 8-9 lemurs, they are led by a dominant female.

Their diet is mainly of fruit but also consumed are flowers, leaves, fungi and the odd invertebrate.

Females are fertile around May and usually give birth to a single baby after a gestation period of around 4-4½ months.
