Make up my mind on this option for the X5.
So the owners of the new X5M's are having stone chip issues from the front (275/40/20) tires and painted fender moldings. Damage is worse in the red areas.
Enough yuppies complained to BMWNA, so they developed fitted 3M laminate strips and mudflaps to fight against the front tires sandblasting the side of the SUV.

It got me thinking, should I expect the same? I don't have painted fender moldings but I did swap out my 275/40/20 9.5" +45 fronts for a second set of 315/35/20 10.5" +30 rears. (Nice to be able to rotate tires) Due to spoke design of the rear wheel, I was able to ditch the 10mm spacers that were used with the old 9.5" wheels, and adding the optional front fender arches helped the hellaflush. With 315's up front as well, there's a lot more exposed tire now.
So I ordered the E53 optional mudflaps, and not sure if want. Took pics. I fitted them without rivets, so they're not exactly on all the way, but you get the idea.
I'm just not sure that I like the "flow" with the mudflaps installed.
I don't know.
You decide.

Mudflaps do not flow with the rest of the car.
You decide if thats worth it. I say get some of those 3m strips, personally. Less visually invasive.

That's pretty much my gut feeling Shawn. Unsure on cost for custom 3M where needed + installation. I'm guessing between $500-$700. 10x the cost of the mudflaps. Meh.
edit: Tischer BMW is letting me test fit to decide on keeping or returning.... I think that's pretty alright of them.

without reading the post, i hardly noticed the difference in the side-by-sides.
so i don't think the mudflaps make any significant visual difference. and if it does the job and doesn't cost you any more money, then that's sorta pretty alright.

I posted in NC but prob should have posted here. The car looks a lot better without them IMHO, but your paint will probably suffer, ultimately making it look a lot worse.

I guess I wish they didn't extend THAT low. The distance they flare out is on point.
edit: Could always keep them in the box and assess the short term paint damage (if any) a few thousand miles from now.
edit 2: Maybe I'm just so used to seeing it one way, that this is totally a different look to me, but to others, there's not much of a perceived difference.
