Chevy Cruze SS, Would You Buy it if it Comes?
Reports out of out Austrialia tell us that General Motor’s Holden unit could have some added oomph in store for the Cruze compact. Could there be a Cruze SS coming soon?
Holden is hoping to mimic Mazda’s lineup with the Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 and Volkswagen’s Golf/Jetta and GTI/GLI by offering sedan, hatchback, and high-performance variants; we already know that there is a five-door version of the Cruze on its way to certain markets, While this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a hotter Cruze, this is the first time that we’re hearing about the use of the storied SS badge.
Right now top-spec Cruze models in both the U.S. and Australia use a 138-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4. It is rumored that the hotter Cruze SS could use the turbocharged 1.6-liter I-4 from the Opel Astra, which produces 177 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, or creating a Cruze HSV, using the 286-horsepower, twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder from the recently unveiled Astra OPC The Cruze and Astra share the same Delta II architecture, so it is theoretically possible to see any of the powertrain options from the Astra appear in the Cruze.
Right now there are no plans to bring the Cruze hatchback to the U.S. and a high-performance Cruze sounds like it may make it off of Australian shores, if it even sees the light of day. What do you say — would you want to see a Cruze SS here in the U.S.? Sound off in the comments below.

The Cruze is so much nicer than anything else GM has offered for a midsize sedan. I really like these cars but have yet to test drive one.

So let me get this straight. The Cruze replaces the Cobalt. But the Cruze SS has a 100hp less? Hell it only has about 20 more hp than the outgoing base model Cobalt.
Not to mention that Chevy is contemplating throwing an SS badge on something sub 200hp.
Don't get me wrong the Cruze is a good looking car and I wouldn't mind dailying one. But SS? No thanks.

Ehhh... No. 286HP FWD subcompact sounds like a nightmare, especially with so many RWD and AWD cars available with 300+.

Cobalt was an official Stage 1 with 280hp
The Focus RS is putting down 301hp. The newer focus has some new diff which is supposed to make quite a bit more controllable under heavy acceleration and cornering.
