Opinions about the new Z28? The host seems pretty excited about it...I am too.

To optimize the track performance of the Camaro Z/28, the engineering team subjected it to an intensive lightweighting program, saving 100 pounds (45 kilograms) compared to the naturally aspirated Camaro SS and 300 pounds (136 kilograms) to the supercharged Camaro ZL1.

“We looked at every subsystem for opportunities to save weight,” said Oppenheiser. “Our goal was to get rid of everything that didn’t make the car faster, and keep only what was required by law. For example, we wanted to eliminate the audio system completely, but we had to keep a single speaker for the seat-belt chime to meet safety requirements.”

Other examples of weight savings include:

Eliminated the tire-inflator kit, except for Rhode Island and New Hampshire, where it is required by law
Removed interior sound deadener, and carpeting from the trunk
Replaced the standard LN4 battery with a smaller, lightweight, LN3 battery
Specified thinner, 3.2-mm glass for the rear window, compared to 3.5-mm glass on the standard Camaro
HID headlamps and foglights are not available
Air conditioning is only available as a stand-alone option
“The team was so fanatical about saving weight, we even stripped the unused wiring out of the harness when we eliminated the fog lights, speakers, and air conditioning,” said Oppenheiser. “Every ounce saved contributed to making this the most track-capable Camaro we have ever built, and a worthy successor to the Z/28 name.”

I know that muscle cars have traditionally not been the lightest cars but saying you took 300 lbs out of the car and it still weighs 3800 lbs is pretty sad. The parts they put on the car are impressive though.

FTR, my Mustang weighed in at 3525 with half a tank of gas when it was stock. The blower added around 100 lbs of stuff.

After thinking about this for a second they are saying a regular Camaro SS weighs 4100 lbs? I think not. I'm pretty sure my friends auto SS at the track was under 4K.

So they either lied about how much the regular Camaro SS weighs, lied about how much weight they took out, or gave a misleading statement because they took 300 lbs out of the car but added 200 lbs of performance enhancing "stuff" back to the car.

After looking again, Chevrolets original curb weight on a regular 2010 camaro manual transmission was 3870. Some fuzzy math going on here for sure...

Let's see how it compares to the Boss or the Laguna Seca before we start jerking it off

Ok...just looked

The Boss/LS still comes in about 200lbs less than the Z28 and it has 444hp.

The Z28 will have around 500.

Going to be an interesting shootout.

I like Chevy but they keep trying to strip weight why not just add more power? I mean the zl1 is a track car the copo is a straight line track only car but why not make a high hp straight line street car?

Because less weight means better handling for one, two would be adding more power drives the price up a lot as you can see in the zl1 camaro.

Straight line street car? People like to take turns not street race in a widebody integra.
