Default Worth fixing?

Fellow vadriven'ers

As of today I own a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the 5.3 v8 and z71 package.

Here lies the problem:
It was my dad's work truck until the transmission shit out and decided it didn't need reverse anymore. It is extremely loud and clunky when idling and in drive. I don't even trust driving it to the end of my street.

The truck itself is very nice, almost completely loaded. 4 door, z71, 4wd etc etc. The motor has 360,000 miles and still runs smooth. I'm definitely in need of a truck right now and having one would make my vehicle collection pretty well rounded.

What would you do? Is buying a 4l60e from a junkyard and swapping worth it? What are rebuilds running? Would it be better financially to just part-out?

Thanks for serious input. Chevy truck guys especially

is the tranny clunking or is it the engine???

if its the tranny just get one and throw in and drive....

replace the engine later when it goes out...

unless the truck is beat all to hell in and out....then just part it out or sell whiole on craigslist

I'm almost 100% sure its ONLY the transmission. Motor runs smooth (no knocks, used synthetic, and basically all highway miles)

The truck itself is great, it's a 4 door with the selective 4wd and basically loaded. I'd love having a truck, a fun car, and a offroad beater so it fits me great.

Where is a good place to start looking for a replacement transmission? I know they put the 4l60e in just about ever damn car/truck they could so they're out there. Which years/models should I look at?

While we're at it; what other 4spd autos will mate up?

Average cost of a donor trans?

Assuming the body and motor are in good shape and you can get a tranny for cheap, I'd say keep it.

You might want to try looking around on craigslist or ebay as well.

Radford for school, southern chesapeake for summer/christmas.

Does 750 for a trans mean at a junk yard or from someone parting out on a forum for instance? Anyone know what trannys are selling for at pick n pull?

I'm not really worried about doing the work, just the cost to swap vs part-out.

call a yard and ask them what fits it...they will tell you what years and vehicles fit...call 2382885 and ask for kevin...tell him what you have and see if he has one and if not ask him what will fit it....

hes straight up and will lead you in the right direction
