Best base single cam Honda starting point (since we all know thats what he was talking about) IMPO is the D16Z6. Good chamber shape. Quench can easily be optimized. Oiling isnt as issue. It's OBDI. MAD TYTE VTEC y0! Stock bottom end internals can be reliable up to 400 HP with a good tune.

+2 for LS1. LT1's can also make good power but they only have the advantage of bolting into older GM vehicles.

please show me a internally stock z6 thats making "up to" 400hp.

d-series rods are like toothpicks..ive never heard of any internally stock d-series making anywhere near 400hp. IIRC z6 rods are only good for ~200hp, 250hp max.

Here's the build thread on H-T
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread...104408&page=15

It has forged internals now and is making 420 on race gas. But it hit like completely stock!

And it's for sale if you want it LOL

id like to see a dyno graph of that motor, and if so, thats an extreme example. i mean, how many people can say they have a jeff evans tuned car? that man touching your car adds +200whp. ive always heard that stock d-series rods werent capable of holding more than 180hp, so even seeing 250whp would be pretty nice.

but OP, go ahead and dismiss beating b/k series cars with a boosted d, unless the b/k is bone stock.
