You CANNOT tell from looks. Drive the car, test all gears. The best way to test the clutch is pull the ebrake up and let the clutch out really slow to see how it grips.

When you say a "manual car", do you mean like the Flinstones where you drive with your feet? Or more along the lines of the old "crank cars" that you have to wind up to start?

If it is an old crack car make sure the crank glides into the position easily and turns

make sure the parking pin is not worn out....

thats a common issue on manual transmission cars...and ask the guy when the last time the torque convertor was flushed

the only difference from an auto to manual is the pistons, so you have to take the head of and make sure they have a slight hole in them, if they do BUY IT! its a manual
