Not so fast!

Cliffs: Tires can be shelved for over a decade before being sold as 'new' leading to tread separation, dry rotting, death, and other horrible nasty things. Retailers and car companies want the gov't to act, but it's not going to happen.

i dont know specific numbers, but Tire rack, discount tire direct, and other online retailers are the worst offenders of this.

every one of my tire warehouses sell their stock off after sitting on it for a year or so, and the number one purchaser of their stock is tire rack.

I got the Falkens on my car from DTD about a month ago. I checked the dates on them and they were all made in the first few weeks of 08, so no more than 3-4 months old. Never bought from Tire Rack though, so I can't really say whether they have issues with that or not.

The last four of the DOT on the tire are the week and year the tires were made. I'd always check that.

Actually its ironic you posted this. I had a friend who had a nearly NEW set of pirelli's dry rot on his car. This would probably explain how that ended up happening.

That's why everyone should buy cheap high-volume tires that don't have a chance to sit around. Kumhos FTW.

Hmmmm... this is kinda surprising.

I bought my F1s from Tirerack and upon delivery, the were soft, malleable and excellent condition. Perhaps you can see some forms of deterioration with the naked eye, but even after a couple years, they still look great. Besides, Tirerack may quite possibly have the greatest customer service. Ever.

Pretty much the same for me. I just got in 2 ZE-912 tires from DTD today: one from week 7 of 08 and the other from week 10 of 08.
