i wait at least 24 hours. depending on the clear you use though it can be done within a few hours as long as the temp was right while your clear was drying. but that mainly applies for things like quick flash and hyper cure clearcoats that dry within 30-45 minutes and are sandable and buffable within an hour.

Most shop quality products (dupont, house of kolor, ect) will have tech manuals for all of their products online. If you used something cheap than I would wait at least 24 hours. I would just hit it lightly with 2000 grit, be careful around any style lines or edges because over sanding is verrrry common to someone who is not experienced. As for buffing, if you are using a commercial buffer I would hit it with rubbing compound than change out the mitt and use swirl mark remover.

iam a painter what kinda paint? if its good paint 2 days cheep paint 10 days to let die back so it dont peal make sure you know how its not easy to buff one wrong move an its step 1 again so be carfull.
