Not that you don't know this already, but I don't know that much about Jeeps. Now that I've see the older models side by side you're right, they're completely different.

the cherokee and the grand cherokee are completely different vehicles, but they have a lot of similarites such as drivetrains, etc. the biggest difference is the grand cherokees are more of a luxury vehicle where the cherokee is more off road based. the picture you found is what the next generation is supposed to look like, i think its a '15 concept

Jeep is selling more vehicles to soccer moms and less to frat boys.

They need to move more towards the boxy, older Range Rover Defender series.

It used to be if you wanted an offroader you looked at a jeep, now they've become more concerned with luxury over off road capability. It's pretty sad Imo

It's self-inflicted market cannibalization. People serious about off-roading buy older Jeeps instead of the newer ones because they're cheaper (and some would argue more capable). This forced Jeep to redesign their models to appeal to people that aren't interested in off-roading. They had to find a new market in order to stay in business. The same thing happened to Range Rover.

More puzzling is the fact they're still changing things like crawl gear ratios while trying to really court the luxury market.

It's sad to see this. I drive a 99 XJ (Cherokee) and my sister's got a brand new Liberty (which replaced the Cherokee) and they're completely different. Her's drives a lot nicer, but mine will go damn near anywhere and she wonders why i tell her hers isnt a real Jeep

that is kind of confusing. I guess they are still trying to make a futile attempt at staying with their heritage, but who is gonna go out and by a 30k+ Jeep and take it off road?
