Default SRT-10 Ram Quad Cab (Autoweek)

Why Ask Why? Any Viper-Powered Vehicle Is Okay With Us, And This One Really Hauls

MIKE FLOYD
Published Date: 10/18/04

Fast cars?and trucks, SUVs, golf carts, whatever?get two thumbs-up around here, so when an outfit like Chrysler?s SRT performance tuning firm works its magic, it gets attention.

One favorite SRT creation is Dodge?s pickup screamer, the Viper-powered Ram SRT-10 standard cab, which recently snatched the title of world?s fastest truck away from Ford?s SVT Lightning.

So why should SRT create this Quad Cab monster?

"We wanted to give Viper owners a way to tow their vehicles to the track and then be able to take the truck out for a few laps as well," said SRT director Dan Knott. Yeah, right. Would it also have something to do with a burgeoning sport truck market?

Or how about: Because you can never have enough vehicles with an 8.3-liter 500-hp V10 in the engine bay? Whatever the reasons, thanks much, Dan.

The SRT-10 Quad Cab was developed to fill the void created by the standard-cab Ram SRT?s main pure truck shortcoming?its lack of towing capacity. The Quad Cab is a mite kinder and gentler than its racier sibling.

Besides the obvious cab difference between the two SRTs, the biggest change for the Quad Cab mechanically is the mating of a four-speed automatic transmission to the Viper block.

Dodge engineers say getting the transmission (adapted from Ram diesel applications) to work right was the trickiest part of building the truck. It had to handle the beastly 525 lb-ft of maximum torque and be able to tow 7500 pounds. In went a beefed-up torque converter and a two-piece driveshaft. Engineers included a custom tranny calibration, and gave its live rear axle a 4.56 ratio. The goal: improve launch feel, low-end acceleration and tow capacity. From behind the wheel, you?ll think it is transmission accomplished.

As Knott said, this SRT?like all SRTs?is also prepared for track duty. At the drag strip, Dodge officials boast, the Quad Cab will do mid-five-second 0-to-60-mph runs, and sprints the quarter-mile in the high-13s.

While it is heftier (5450 pounds) and has a longer wheelbase (140.5 inches) than its standard-cab compatriot, the Quad Cab shares the same ride height and much the same performance-tuned underpinnings
, including independent front suspension and stabilizer bar, beefed-up springs and Bilstein monotube shocks all around.

The verdict after roaring around an autocross track on a gray, rainy day at Chrysler?s proving grounds is that this behemoth acquits itself surprisingly well. When we needed to slow down before things got too wild, SRT?s new 15-inch front, 14-inch rear, four-pot, opposed-piston caliper-disc setup with ABS (also available on the ?05 standard cab) stopped it with authority.

With the exception of the predictable bed hippity-hop over rough pavement, the Quad Cab as a daily commuter is fine. Its hood scoop, NASCAR Craftsman Truck-inspired and engineered, wind tunnel-tested rear wing and 22-inch rims shod with 305/40YR Pirelli Scorpion Zeros definitely crank the ooh-and-aah meter.

The cabin has comfortable seating for four, with nicely bolstered, SRT-accented seating. Options include DVD navigation and Uconnect?a Bluetooth-enabled, hands-free communications system. A tonneau cover/wing combo (available next March) features gas struts to help raise and lower it for easier access to the bed.

Yes, the Viper owners of the world would have survived without the SRT-10 Quad Cab. But we say, the more snakes, the better.

What the fuck?!?!?! They ruined an otherwise badass truck. Speaking of SRT10 Rams, I was looking at one with a salesman today up here in Michigan. I was doing my damndest to get a test drive, but he wasn't buying it. Can't blame me for trying though, can you?

Its made to tow this time. I believe the real SRT-10 ram had like a 1000lb tow limit, which is incredibly small when compared to the tow limit of the Lightning.

It wont run 13s. The regular cab ones that are out now are barely running mid to high 13s.

The truck run 13 because of a lack of traction, on SRT's first test run with the viper ram they had to add 500lbs in the back to run a 12.7 on street tires. Traction is what wins races, Goat should know everything about that

For those bitchin about AT:

Go buy the standard cab. This wasn't built as a "race truck".

For those bitchin about high 13's:

Go buy the standard cab. This wasn't built as a "race truck". The thing weighs 5500lbs and can tow 7500lbs. It was built to tow and carry passengers, just so happens that it's pretty fast. If you think it needs to loose weight, go buy a crx and put a viper motor in it.

i like it...if i had the 50k i'd have me a nice daily/tow truck...

harley f-150 = lightning with 4-doors and tow
quad cab srt-10 = standard srt-10 with 4-doors and tow

its okay for ford to make a performance 4-door, but dodge cant?

there is no srt10 running 12.7 stock. The fastest I have heard was one with intake and a catback I think with a professional driver and it ran a 12.8. Here are some times from srt10 owners.

"Well today was fun,but i must humbly come before you guys and tell you that...........I ABSOLUTELY SUCK AS A DRIVER! I SUCK, I SUCK, I SUCK- I have no qualms about telling you guys how it went down-

NO EXCUSES- (1st track day, 1st stick, and 1st motor with real power) ,like i said though,no excuses,
1st run -- 14.7
2nd run -- 14.5
3rd run -- 15.2 or something, missed 3rd gear
4th run --14.3"

"I ran 9 times marking low and high 13.9's then busting a 13.877 it was pretty consistant but the truck cant hook up we need to do something quick the car could be a 13 flat or high 12"s just if we had traction.ALso i was wondering if anyone has ran there truck the 1/4 mile and wat did u run? Also every lightning guy wouldnt get away from my truck it was like a new born baby to them....hahahahah.....Ford guys....

here are my numbers:

Reaction:--1.043
60 ft:------2.345
330 ft:-----6.o85
1/8 ET:-----9.130
1/8 MPH:----80.72
1/4:----------------13.877
1/4 MPH:-----------104.20"

"Yesterday i went to the track for the first time since i bought the ram,it was hot but the track was sticky and is at sea level(It's by the beach literally if you have poor brakes you'll end up inthe water!!) well to make a long story short, i left out the clutch at about3,500rpm and the truck bogged!! absolutely no wheelspin , i had 2.20 60ft,9.15 in the 8th and 14.1@99.78 in the quarter., tried again same results oh i was "granny shifting"still getting used to the long shifter, the truck has only 1,200 miles, rear tires were at 30psi any help will be appreciated, also do the distance of the pedals will have something to do with that,i mean if the pedal are all the way down will the truck accelerate the same at wot? thanks for the help."

"I just rolled in from Shreveport. In a loosing effort, I was able to improve on my best time. Previous best was 13.1 for me. I sprayed a 125 shot, removed tailgate and spare (left wing on) and dropped tire pressure to 23 psig. I had some trouble in practice leaving (clutch). After a little cool down I tried easing it out of the hole then hitting the gas. Ablsolutely no tire spin. I think I can improve on the 60' (practice) and lower the time some more. But, as you can see by the yellow slip, I was done for today. I drove 635 mile round trip, got 14 MPG at 80+ mph, and ran a low 12. I'm happy.

60' - 2.023
330 - 5.2773
1/8 - 7.945
1/8 - 91.78 mph
1000 - 10.235
1/4 - 12.152
mph - 117.19"

"best time was 2.45 @ 60 ft.
quarter mile 14.07 @ 101.06

I ran four times and 60 foot time was always in the 2.3 to 2.45 range. Funny my fastest time was also my slowest sixty foot time."

"Just ran my truck at the Fayetteville track, ran a 12.40 at 114.1 mph.The Fayetteville track is about two miles from the airport. And i sprayed a 125 shot. My 60 ft was 1.99, 1/8 was 8.0 at 90.60. Tires psi was 22 and i took of the spare tire and the frount seat out. Mods were magnaflow, cold air intake, and a zex syetem. Just need some slicks now, had some wheel hope when i came off the line."

"John Hennessey
www.HennesseyPerformance.com
World's Quickest Ram SRT10 (11.26 @ 122.5)
281-346-1370"

So the fastest one there is was Hennessey built, cost 40k to mod, and only runs 11.2 with 800HP. What a deal! Hell two trucks spraying a 125 shot are running mid 12s. Thats 625HP to run a 12. Check out how much Hennesseys mod list is:
