Default side pipes

I just picked up a 72 stingray corvette and everything on the car looks great except for the side pipes. On one side the muffler hangs just a little lower than the heat sheild. The heat sheild is crappy condition and is the only flaw on the car. I want to change this but can't figure out what to do. I was looking into hooker headers and side pipes but dont want them to be too loud. The exhuast system on it now sounds good so I might just get the heat sheilds re-chromed. Any suggestions?

The side pipes really aren't that bad untill you really step on it. It has a pretty normal exhuast sound untill you step on it. And why are you letting your dad decide what to do with your car? Also, if the heat shield is the main problem, just take it off. Or I'm sure you can find a replacement.

Well its preaty much both mine and my dads, im just the one who's going to work on it. The exhaust looks like crap under the heat sheild so thats not going to happen. I don't know, I want to put the hooker system on it but he wants to just chrome the heat shield because he thinks thats all it needs. We picked it up at Carlisle at the all GM nationals and they had some sweet vetts with all kinds of different systems on them. My dad thinks that if we put another system on it, it will down the value because it will make the car less "original". I know thats true but I doubt the exhuast system on it now is original anyway.
