Selling Car to Out-Of-State Buyer
Hey all,
Quick question in regards to selling a car to an out of state buyer.
Obviously I know the following
- Complete back of Car title
- Complete Bill of Sale
- Cancel my insurance
- Notify DMV car has been sold
And that the new owner gets
- Completed car title
- Completed BoS
And when they register they will get a new Title in their name. Now my question comes in with an out of state buyer. Obviously they cannot register the car and get plates for their state (AZ specifically) without having the title and bos. Insurance I know they can get - just need the VIN. But do they take the VA title to a VA DMV and get a AZ title?
I tried Googling but all I found was mostly crap (registering without registration, how to sell, etc). I couldn't find specifics. Anyone point me in the right direction? They would like to drive the vehicle back from VA to their state so tags are a must, but I do not want to leave myself liable with them having my license plates (for obvious reasons)

if the buyer must drive the car to their state then he/she has to go to dmv, [problably get the title on their name] ask for transport tags, which i believe are good for 5 days, or get a set of 1 month temp paper tags. the best thing to do its to contact ur local DMV and find out.

Re: Selling Car to Out-Of-State Buyer
I don't know about your buyers state but in VA all you need is a trip permit and insurance on said vehicle no plates of any kind required.
I purchased a car the other weekend with one of these, it's essentially a permission slip to move a car from point A to point B, printed it out from the DMV website - 5 bux well spent.
So see if your buyers state has something like one of these.

I wished I'd known about this sooner as it would have made buying several other cars WAY easier.

Yeah you can get a trip permit for like $5 off the dmv website, www.dmvnow.com And once they get to their state they gotta go to their DMV and transfer the title... I just got and sold a truck from PA a few months ago
