Rev matching is matching the engine rev's to the drivetrain speed. Its used during downshifting to make the transition from one gear to the next as smooth and seamless as possible, helping keep the car balanced while driving hard/racing.

Doing it best just takes practice learning the car and the throttle responce in relation to how far you have to depress the accelerator.

Its to match the speed of the transmission to the speed of the engine. Its for smooth downshifts so it doesnt unsettle the car under heavy braking and turning such as those performed on a track. Clutch in, blimp throttle while braking, shift down, clutch out. Or clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, blimp throttle while braking, clutch in, down shift, clutch out.

Edit: you beat me to it

Double Edit:

I do it every time I downshift in any car with a manual transmission . I downshift alot, because I dont like coasting in neutral in case I need to step on the gas to avoid an accident or something.

If done properly, rev matching is much less harmful on your clutch and drivetrain than downshifting without rev matching.

If not done properly, then its just wasted motion.

yea the second way is double clutching. On modern cars, there is no need to double clutch.

shawn22 - yeah, ok, i remember my friend saying that he downshifts incase of an accident or anything like you said.

but is this the order

1. clutch in
2. blip
3. put in lower gear
4. release clutch
