Vinegar based glass cleaner has a chance, but the best thing, use a little modern toothpaste. It's a mild enough polish to leave the glass sparkling, but will remove the spots if they are indeed hard water spots.

Acid rain spots are much more difficult than hard water spots. Here at work we use C R Laurence "Sparkle" cleaner and stain remover. I also have an acid that is used to clean the spots off high rise building glass. http://crlaurence.com/ProductPages/S...4.html?Origin=

How does this NOT effect your paint? If it is hard water, then elbow grease and reacting(cleaning)quickly is all it takes...

Just about any mild polish should do the trick.
