Default Porsche 2.5L 360hp 4 Cylinder Details Emerge

It appears there was some news about this in 2008, but this is new news.

New details are starting to emerge about Porsche's four-cylinder engine, which is slated to be launched in an entry-level roadster.

In an interview with Autocar, Wolfgang Durheimer - the outgoing head of research and development - confirmed the engine is under development and could be used in the 2012 Boxster and Cayman. More interestingly, he went on to say it "could be applied, if necessary, to the 911." While this sounds like blasphemy, he added "Our decision is, on the 911 side, we'll stay with the flat [six]. But there are opportunities for the future."

Expected to displace 2.5-liters, the four-cylinder engine will reportedly be unique to Porsche and available in turbocharged guise. While specifications are still pending, the latter variant could produce upwards of 360 hp (268 kW / 365 PS).

In similar news today BMW has announced their all-new 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol/gasoline engine in the X1 xDrive28.

350hp out of a 2.5L 4cylinder isnt too hard. non turbo it should be making between 220-250.

How many 4 cylinder engines are putting that out N/A? Wasn't the S2k the highest with like 230?

Even turbo-charged I can't think of any that are putting that out from the factory.

the last gen prelude made like 220 crank iirc (2.2L)
the sti's/evo's make like 260crank, 300 with a re-flash (2.0 and 2.5L)
the vw gli/gti make low-mid 200s, high 200s with exhaust and re-flash (1.8L)
then you have cars like the new mazdas that make pretty good numbers stock, and are 2.0/2.2L iirc

STis make 300/305 at the crank. Exhaust and tune net about 350 crank. 230-240awhp to about 270-280awhp, roughly.

Porsche will probably only have to make minor changes to get 360hp at the crank. Different exhaust, slightly bigger turbo, and/or better tuning should easily get it there.

The 968 had 3.0L straight 4 bangar that made 236hp in the early 90's, so not Porsche's first attempt

the 944 turbo s made 250 hp out of 2.5 liters 20+ years ago. 350+ hp 951s are fairly commonplace.
