Default PLACE TO GO IN THE VA BEACH AREA TO HAVE SUNROOF WELDED SHUT.

I've recently gained a new hobby and that is autocrossing only one problem with my s14. With my helmet on i have to bend my neck in a slightly uncomfortable position to not hit the headliner. Ive heard of people seeling up their sunroofs on these cars but who around here could do that kind of work. Just the actual welding a plate over the whole sunroof and not a crappy job but i don't want to spend a fortune. I will handle the removal of all the sunroof components. Also will a s14 non sunroof model headliner fit right in my current ones place?

cliff notes
- want sunroof welded shut
- s14 headliner swap?

Welding is quite difficult as you get a lot of stretch/buckling in the metal as you weld it.

Quite a few race cars, including mine, have a sheetmetal plug pop-riveted in place, with something like silicon between the two pieces to prevent leaking.

Food for thought.

there are a few people

PM

greaser
judge
anyone working at a body shop etc

i am not 100% on this but i don't think a headliner swap will work because of the difference in angle the roof of the sunroof vs non sunroof models.

just find someone with a base model to swap shells.

The cheap way would be to get a carbon and fiberglass piece like the one above, and get it bonded in place with urethane adhesive. In other words, it will mount like a windshield, but you can use urethane adhesive that's quicker setting and not spec'd for glass mounting. I made one like that for Jay's 3000GT but it mounted as a functional replacement for the stock glass, not bolted down like the one in the picture. A metal one would be better, but would take a fair deal of metal fab if you want the shape to match the stock roof line. The nice thing about a welded-in metal piece is that it will help to reinforce the body, unlike a sunroof or a carbon piece. A stiffer chassis is always a good thing if you're going to autocross..

I'm going to be taking mine out at the next autocross to see if if it makes a difference. Of course mine is easy to remove so I can remove it for the autocross and put it back in when I get home.

Weight of the glass over my head cant be a good thing compared to no weight.

Of course, it might make the already flimsy chassis that much more flimsy. Guess I'll find out.

headroom for helmet I would assume
it's one of those things the 240's sorely lack

you could try removing some padding from the seat as well
