Older BMW maintenance Questions

I would really like to get an older BMW for myself (cobalt is wifes car). Over the weekend at a wedding a family member of mine had a 94 bmw 3 series. Not sure of the exact model. She let me drive it and I really liked it. I have always wanted one but was too worried about maintenance costs. She has only had hers for 2 months so she doesn't know what the maintenance cost look like.

Is a 94 BMW expensive to maintain? Like is a starter goes out, or an alternator. I always work on my own cars. Is that impossible with a bmw without being a certified bmw tech? I only ask because it seems everyone takes there cars to certified bmw specialists.

I hope this all makes sense.

An E36 is an easy car to take care of.
Make sure you get a six cylinder model, either a 325 or 328.

I have a 92 e30 cabrio (318i) and I love it, The maintenance has been cheap and there are a lot of enthusiasts that post detailed diy repairs and will answer any questions you might have. It seems that the maintenance is only expensive if you take it to a shop for everything. The 6 cylinders are nice for the added power but the 318s have the better gas mileage if you just plan on cruising around.

I bought mine with the understanding that there was a lot that needed to be done but when I started getting down to fixing things I found it was really easy to work on and the only thing that has cost over 10 dollars was replacing the tires which has nothing to do with the actual car.
older bmw's are the way to go if you want cheap maintenance imo

But tires don't have to do with cars, so he is good.
