Default No matter what we do we are ricers. HaHa

Before you start flaming me I do own 2 civics. A 06 civic Si and a 94 hatch but i def am not calling any of my cars JDM. To me they are nice not jdm. I know this dont apply to everyone but i figured i would post it since i thought it was funny.

This was taken from this web site.

New Age Rice

JDM is an acronym for Japan Domestic Market. JDM also refers to an increasingly popular, and zealous style of modification done on a Japanese vehicle where one would swap out perfectly working USDM (United States Domestic Market) parts that were installed on the original vehicle and covered under factory warranty, then spend several hundred dollars (or thousands) to import a most likely used counterpart of the exact same part that serves the exact same purpose with minimal cosmetic difference e.g. dumping 92-95 Civic hatchback glass OEM headlights in favor of used plastic JDM OEM headlights, or dumping OEM 92-95 Civic hatchback tail lights in favor of used JDM OEM counterparts because of their lack of reflectors (illegal in the States, BTW), or even dumping 92-95 Civic hatchback OEM glass hatch to acquire the "exotic" JDM bronze tinted hatch glass. On more extreme instances, these so-called enthusiasts will import Japanese radiator metal plates, gas tag stickers, SRS caution tags or "Type R 2 star decal" - all of which are in Japanese characters and equally useless in the States. Some will go as far as to swap out gauge clusters for JDM counterparts, not only disregarding odometer laws and screwing up the odometer reading, but change the speedometer readings from MPH to kPH - again, extremely useless. The said modifier will have to keep track of the true odometer readings by saving the original readings before the swap and then subtract the difference recorded by the new used JDM unit. All in the name of JDM bling.

These days, it just means the new generation of ricers, and those who actively participate in this practice are called JDM Ricers. Old school ricers had flamboyant and outrageous body kits, amalgamation of parts from different makes and models, clear/altezza tail or corner lights, color matching interiors or decorative windshield vinyl banners. Nowadays, it's spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to remain ... stock, albeit "JDM" stock and following the latest fad in the Japanese automotive community, like hanging a plushie on one's tow hook or slapping on an Option 2 bumper sticker above the exhaust tip at a 45-degree angle (it must be tilted at an angle and any other bumper sticker is considered tacky, lame or ironically "ricey"), spending $100.00 on a "Honda VERNO" windshield banner (keep in mind that any other banners is considered "ricey") or even spending $500.00 on an X-bar (i.e. Miracle X-Bar by Next) on a daily driven car that really serves no purpose and eliminates the purpose of the cargo space (this mod is analogous to truck drivers with a useless spoiler installed across their tailgate - it defeats the purpose of the tailgate). JDM ricers will tell you that they "feel" the car being stiffer with the bars that resembles a miniature grade school jungle gym, which is ironic because one would have to be an extension of the car to notice any real difference or stiffness. Also, JDM Ricers will spend thousands of dollars to swap out perfectly working OEM seats with side air bags feature in favor of used SRS-less Sparco or Recaro seats and in turn, sell their OEM seats for a fraction of their OEM value.

There are inter-JDM ricer turf war as well. Whereas the wannabe JDM Ricers with their Rotas and replica JDM parts will poke fun at the oldschool ricers, authentic JDM enthusiasts will look down on these wannabe JDM Ricers as posers. But these JDM Ricers fail to realize that their RMC Grams Light 57 Pro with Titanium lips are worth 2x-3x the value of the Civics or Integras they install the wheels on. In the case of an extreme JDM Ricer, the cumulative JDM modifications done on their car is usually worth twice the value of their KBB vehicle value, more than enough to use as downpayment on a nice upscale classy vehicle.

JDM ricers also have the tendencies to refer to a car by their 2 letter + 1 number chasis code i.e. Acura RSX = DC5, 92-95 Honda Civic hatchback = EG6, Honda 96-01 Civic hatback = EK9, 94-01 Acura Integra = DC2.

The biggest JDM ricer subculture usually stems from the Honda/Acura community, more severly isolated in the Acura RSX sector. Most Acura RSX-driving JDM ricers refuse to acknowledge the existence of Acura as a subsidiary of Honda. If you spot a red (or silver) Honda emblem on an Acura RSX in place of the OEM Acura "A" caliper emblem, then you've just spotted the mark of a JDM ricer. Chances are, they have a useless "Type-R coin holder" and their steering wheel still retains the Acura "A" emblem. In the case of a true JDM enthusiast ricer, they'd even go as far as swapping out a perfectly working OEM front air bag cover for a used JDM air bag (usually costs $300.00-$500.00+ for a used unit) just to get a shiny red Honda "H" in place of the Acura "A". They don't mind disabling the safety feature of the air bag or go through a back breaking procedure just to make the JDM unit work with the USDM system, all the while risking airbag deployment in the process. No, not at all. The JDM Ricer subculture's zealous mentality is baffling and quite a case for cultural anthropologists to study. On non-Acura RSX JDM ricer vehicles, look for a green and yellow "Shoshinsha" (new driver) badge or a yellow and orange "Kareha" (senior driver) badge. They are usually suction-cupped onto the windshield, passenger side. These badges are automatic indicators of a JDM Ricer, no matter the make and model.

The number 1 best defense of a JDM ricer when they are pointed out and laughed at by normal drivers for badging their Acuras to Hondas, is "they are jealous that our rides are better than theirs". And if the joke cracker happens to drive an American car, formulaic domestic jokes are thrown like a knee-jerk reaction. No doubt will the same defense be invoked as a response to this definition entry.

P.S. most JDM Ricers were probably once oldschool ricers themselves. Some use the JDM tactic to cover up their shameful past in form and function. In a way, JDM Ricers are like closet homosexual.

P.S.S. most JDM Ricers' car are usually slow or stock enough to be smoked by old school ricers' car who spent money on both cosmetic (taste and style is subjective) and go parts while the JDM Ricer are more concerned with red Honda emblems, side-step garnish with deliberate engrish phrases such as "Ride Exciting! / Drive Exciting!" and JDM decals, gas tags, SRS caution tags or radiator plates.
Normal person: Why the hell do you have a Honda emblem on your Acura RSX?

JDM Ricer: Because it's mad JDM tyte y0!, and I am just badging it to what it truly is. Look at it, 95% of all the parts on the car says "Honda" on it.

Normal person: I know it's a Honda by heart, like Infiniti is Nissan and Lexus is owned by Toyota. So what do you say to a cop when he pulls you over for mismatching badges? I mean your steering wheel and wheel caps still has the Acura emblems on them and your registration no less will say the same thing.

JDM Ricer: The same thing I just told you, because I know better than Honda and this whole "Acura" thing, it is just a failed made-up marketing ploy, y0!

Normal person: Right... You're a total JDM Ricer * walks away silently *

The main two things that killed the whole "JDM" fad are bandwagon illeduducated kids and the places that harbor them.
