PLYMOUTH, Michigan — Karmann USA says it is "not closing its doors" while its German parent, famed coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, attempts to restructure after filing for bankruptcy in April.

Earlier this week, Wilhelm Karmann closed its vehicle assembly plant in Germany. The company intends to focus on its roof systems business.

Karmann USA, which is headquartered in suburban Detroit, provides convertible tops for Ford, Chrysler, General Motors and Volkswagen and "continues to serve as a leading full-service provider of automotive manufacturing and full-vehicle engineering solutions from its Detroit-area technical center," the company said in a statement.

"The restructuring of the Wilhelm Karmann Company's German operations and the previously announced closure of its vehicle assembly line in Germany will not have a major impact" on the firm's North America operations, the statement said.
