Underhood, the hybrid setup is similar in principle to that of the Toyota Prius. An electric motor powers the car at low speed. Then, when the throttle is aggressively applied or when traveling at higher speeds, the gasoline-powered engine — in the Mitsu's case, a 3.8-liter V-6 with variable valve timing (MIVAC) — comes to life and takes over. The two power units combine to produce 270 bhp and are mated to a 6-speed transmission.

Mitsubishi incorporated a second electric motor, a giant 150-kW unit, behind the cabin. It sends its 201 bhp to the rear tires, making this car all-wheel drive. Mitsubishi calls this new technology E-Boost, because, as the name implies, the rear-mounted motor is there to act like a supercharger or turbocharger, boosting the acceleration of the car. E-Boost is activated only when you get on the throttle aggressively, such as during passing maneuvers.
That's 470HP AWD. Too bad it tips the scales at 4000lbs.
