New Driving Penalties effective: july 1st
taken from s2ki.com
Effective July 1, in the wonderful Commonwealth of Virginia, any traffic ticket, with the exception of regular speeding, will carry heavy civil penalties in addition to the fine and court costs that you will already have to pay.
Here are just a few...
Driving on a suspended or revoked permit - Civil penalty $750.00 + the court cost & fines
Reckless Driving - Civil penalty $1,050.00 + the court cost & fines
DUI - 1st offense - Civil penalty $2,250.00 + the court cost & fines
Failure to give proper signal - Civil penalty $1,050.00 + the court cost & fines
Leaving the scene of an accident - Civil penalty $3,000.00 + the court cost & fines
This is the website that lists the offenses and how much each civil penalty is. It gives the breakdowns of installments that the state will allow, etc.

A $1,050 fine for failing to signal? I don't buy that one...
As far as DUI and leaving the scene of an accident, I wish the fine was 20 times that.

Haha, I just attended traffic school.
Also some stupid laws are:
Kids under 8 and 80 pounds have to be in a car seat
When your under 18 you cant have more than one minor as a passenger.
theres a lot more that I learned from that class, but it's ridiculous the laws that they create.

Was the failure to give proper signal penalty severe before the change? If so, then I could beleive it. I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for "failure to signal", so I dont know.

It wasn't so severe, but while I was in Traffic School they did mention if the cop wanted to be an ass hole, he could give you a Reckless driving charge as well.

I definitely have. My dad got one when there was traffic and he just switched lanes without signaling. my dad just had to take the class, then it would be dismissed since he has a good driving record.

This is a great idea, glad they are doing it. Just wish the fines were a lot steeper.
If they raise these fines enough, maybe that bullshit HR Transportation Authority will dissolve.
