MK 3 Focus Owners, sound off

Just curious since it seems to be a fairly common issue, have any of you other than myself experienced the "Steering Assist Failure"/dead power steering assembly?

$1800 quote from the stealership and the car is only a year old... Kind of a kick in the nuts. Wondering if anyone else has experienced it and might know of an alternative solution.

A year old? Shouldn't that be covered under warranty?

I wish it were. I've got 78k on the car because I have a 200 mile round trip daily commute and have had to go on travel for work and stuff. Warranty expired due to mileage :/

Should have bought the extended, we did for my wife's '15 because she drives right around ~120 miles a day.

Nice cars though

I like it when it's running, but it's expensive when it breaks. Feels like a German car.

I thought being a new car/commuter that wasn't being beat on that it would hold up. That'll learn me.

I'm currently playing no warranty roulette with a 70,000 mile 2012 German car. We'll see how this goes.

The wife doesn't drive quite that far ( ~120/day on I-95 ), but she just works around traffic hours. Much betterer than paying 3x what we paid for our house for a townhouse up in Northern VA.

:dunno:

More power to you. My 25 minute commute is all the more I'm willing to tolerate.

I live 2 miles away from the office.

The fact is, it doesn't matter if the car is a year old. You've put 78k miles on it, which is roughly equivalent to 6.5 years if you go by the 12k miles per year that is standard for warranty. That's where the old 3 year / 36k mile warranty stuff came from.

So although the steering failure doesn't sound like something that should happen, you should expect to start replacing things that could start to wear out or break on a 6 or 7 year old car. If it's been thouble-free so far, you're doing great.

You should try to work with the dealer and see if they'll split the warranty costs with you as a gesture of goodwill. That's fairly common actually if you talk to the dealer and with Ford corporate in this case. If you're putting 78k miles a year on cars, you'll probably buy more cars from them soon and that's a good card to play as well.

I think that's every new car unfortunately.

Toyota's reputation was stellar when everything had a carbed out 22r with a 4 speed and manually locks.

These days not so much.

I haven't had any issues with mine, but then again it's only got 7k miles on it. There is a FB page for Foci(?) that has some real knowledgable owners in the area, it's called "Hampton Roads, Focus and Fiestas" or something of the like.

Had one months ago but had to get rid of it because of the clutch assembly going bad and the fact that after it being in the shop for a month it still wasn't fixed because the part to fix it was on national backorder. I miss that car. Now with the issue you're having I have no clue if that's a common issue or not. I never had that issue in the one i owned with similar mileage (was a couple years older though). Issues like this are to be expected as a car gets near 100k miles on it though, with certain exceptions but for new cars most start having issues around or just before 100k.
