Operation Land Air and Speed
Traffic Safety Initiative Returns
The Associated Press
December 4, 2009
Operation Land Air and Speed
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Drivers on Interstates 64 and 66 should watch their speed over the next two days.
Virginia State Police will resume the agency's Operation Air, Land and Speed on those interstates on Friday and Saturday.
The last time the traffic safety initiative concentrated on I-64 and I-66 was this time last year, when more than 1,700 speeders and 250 reckless drivers were cited and 220 safety belt violations were issued.
Virginia State Police receive federal funding for the program. There have been five installments this year, and 21 since the program's inception in 2006.
State Police Superintendent Col. W. Steven Flaherty says it's important for every motorist to buckle up and be careful, especially during the holiday season.

FAIRFAX, Va. --
Better slow down.
State troopers are saturating the area's highways in anticipation of spring break at many colleges and universities.
State police said troopers will be on the prowl along the entire lengths of interstates 95 and 81 on Sunday and Monday. The mass enforcement is part of the department's "Operation Air, Land and Speed" aimed at making motorists more aware of safe driving.
"In the first 10 weeks of this year 139 individuals have already lost their lives in traffic crashes on Virginia's roads," state police Superintendent Col. W. Steven Flaherty said in a statement.
"That may be four fewer deaths than this time last year, but those are still 139 lives forever ended because of a driver's careless and reckless actions."
This is the seventh operation aimed at enforcement along 177 miles of I-95 and 324 miles of I-81. In the October traffic initiative, troopers netted 6,352 traffic tickets and arrests.
Troopers are on the lookout for offenses including speeding, reckless driving, drunken driving and seatbelt violations. Police will be in marked cruisers, undercover cars, on motorcycle and in the skies hunting offenders by helicopter and airplane.

I'd be willing to bet that even will all the fines they take in from this, they will still be in the red. But hey, fuck it, right? Government funded.
Also, second article is talking about spring break...? I take it it's referring to a previous onslaught?
