Default japanese civic designations

my brother just bought a 97 coupe, and i'm looking up parts for him. what's the ek designation for the coupe? i take it the hatch is ek9, but the sites i've looked at have hinted the ek3 is also a hatch... what's the difference? i know somebody on here knows this...
