How To Clean Black Greasy Fingerprints Off White Wheels?
Hey guys,
I washed the car yesterday, and I ran into a problem while doing so: black smear marks from my fingers on the dish of my two front wheels, which are powdercoated white. I was messing around with the brakes a week or two ago, and in doing so, I had to remove and reinstall the wheels which I imagine led to these marks.
Obviously the soap and brush I was using to wash the car didn't cut it - it actually did nothing at all. Today at work I grabbed some paper towels and went at it with Dawn dish soap, Simple Green, and some citrus degreaser, none of which seemed to do anything at all. If any of them worked, it was the Simple Green, and it only cleared up the marks ever so slightly, as they're still clearly visible. I think part of my problem is that I'm using paper towels and not a rag or something, but I dunno.
I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas as to remove these marks, products or methods or whatever. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Go get a bottle of this and scrub it with a brush. I used this on my mustang and the little bit of overspray cleaned the calipers to looking like new. Works wonders.

Most off the shelf wheel cleaners are cheaply formulated to break down brake dust. They're highly acidic. If your wheels are "stained" with grease, they're already porous and spraying them with acid (or alkyline) probably isn't the best choice. Wheel cleaners aren't designed for grease, you'll want to look for a degreaser or maybe even an adhesive remover. 3M makes an adhesive remover that might work well, you can also try some goo gone or even an engine degreaser like the stuff Gunk sells at autozone-type stores. Whatever you use, don't put it directly on the wheel. Put it on a colored cloth and try a small area first. If it lifts the white off your wheel, don't use it.

Scrubbing with undiluted Simple Green didn't lift any paint, so I think I might be able to scrub it a bit harder... I have some GooGone around here, I'll have to try that
