Help On Tire Opinions...

OK, I am getting ready to swap the coilovers on my Audi for a new setup and I am looking for new tires for it. The car is a daily driver, and gets driven about 100 miles a day. It's not a race car and is pretty heavy, so I am looking for a good passenger tire that is available in a 225 40 18 and will best suit my needs on a daily.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help On Tire Opinions...

No performance or visual expectations from the tire?

EDIT: I've run GS-D3s and Kuhmo MXs in that size. I didn't like the GS-D3 because they had issues with cracking the sidewalls leaving a sweet blister. :( No complaints from the Kuhmos though.

Haha. I just edited my post and saw your reply. :(

That is the stock R32 tire/size and they had many problems with them. I've never heard of other sizes having the issues, but the R32 owners were ditching them quick.

This is one of those "if you ask 50 people, you'll get 50 answers".

I would get something with a long and quiet tread life.

I've been pretty happy with Pirelli PZero Nero M+S tires... for daily driving on the EVO.

They were the last set I had on the Cobra and no complaints, other than tread life of 10K-15K miles, but I wasn't an easy driver on them. I didn't have any issues with them at all and they were a great tire in the rain.

Agreed.

That is what I have on my GTI right now. 235/40-18 I actually like them.

Mine didn't last much past 8k on the R32 and it wasn't lowered or anything (no camber wear).

Well I read some reviews and talked to the people at tire rack and they recommend the Bridgestone RE960AS pole positions. Anyone used these?

The car is lowered about 2.5 inches on Koni full coilovers if it makes a difference.

Were you able to get your alignment close to factory specs?

Grease Monkey 04-30-2007 12:04 PM

Re: Help On Tire Opinions...

The current tires are Nitto 555's and while they have held up well, I want something a little quieter and a little softer as far as ride comfort.

Dead on :) It helps to have a nice alignment machine at my disposal.

Near the end of their life, the Pole Positions on my HREs were really loud. Just a little FYI. They gripped like a mofo though in the wet and dry.

Well I probably wont have the car long enough to wear this set out. I'm getting antsy :)

Less than $120 a tire. Made to stay quiet. 300 treadwear rating (with longer-wearing blocks on the inside for camber junkies). This is probably the perfect all-rounder for a semi-performance, semi-luxury car. :)

Who do you know that is running these?

As everyone knows, I'm fond of the GS-D3s, but as Cory said, those particular sizes have a bad reputation. The wider sizes are run by numerous people within the domestic crowd without a complaint.

The S4 had a set for a bit. They aren't super-sticky but the trade-offs are well worth it.

I had the Falken fk451's.... wasn't really impressed with them... They seemed to chunk a lot more.. than i thought they should. The tire wear was not very good either. They seemed to be ok grip wise... when they were new... but half way ... they seemed very slippery.
I know it's a different tire... but same overall design and company.

Doubt it? It's a totally different tire.

Maybe Goodyear fixed all the problems you had with FK451s when they made the new Wingfoot HPs. :dunno:

Wait, were you driving them daily or autox/track use? Dave is going to be pimping his Audi daily...

on my daily driven ms6 i'm running the kuhmo asx they are all season tires and I'm very impressed w/ the lack of road noise. They have a treadware rating of 420. They perform great in both wet and dry conditions and also handled a couple of inches of snow in nj.

those have gotten great reviews as well. I used to have Kumho 712's on my prelude and I had a bunch of issues with the sidewalls getting bubbles in them. Any issues with that on yours?

NONE. I love these tires. My stock tires wore out before i got to 10k. Ask ritz about how well they grip. I can launch my car and still get no wheel spin. Not saying much (little hp and awd) but im impressed. And to top it off they are cheap.

What about the new Nitto tire?

Re: Help On Tire Opinions...

I had Nitto 450's on my Prelude, and had 555's on my Audi. nice handling tire, and a great looking tire, but were absolutely positively TERRIBLE in the rain. I sorta expected to have less than perfect results with a Hi performance summer tire in the rain, but the 450's were down right dangerous and the 555's were only marginally better.

Anyway. I bit the bullet and bought the Kumho ASX. Two of them arrived today and two will be here friday. I put them on today and gave the car a nice fresh alignment with the new coilovers and I am more than pleased. They gripped great in the rain today even when the rear end with the NIttos was sliding all over the place.

I also cannot say enough about the Koni coilovers. They were definitely worth every penny.
