help me out! a/c compressor question.
hey guys let help me out if you can i dont know enough about this mess. im looking at a car that needs an "A/C compressor replaced" (this is what he said it is). i looked it up on repairpal.com and its estimating me almost a 1000$ fix.. (600-parts, 300-labor) this is kindof annoying me the guy said it was a "120$ part from pep boys" and "if youre good with cars its just a couple bolts"... im pretty confused by this mess. help me out? its a 2000 nissan maxima. thanks guys!

Re: help me out! a/c compressor question.
For you to do it right, you need to evacuate the R134a that is in the system, before you take the a/c lines off of the compressor. Then after you replace it, refill the system with oil, dye, and the proper amount of R134a. I'm really doubting the compressor only costing $120. And, most places require you to buy a new accumulator, and orphus tube to get a warranty with a new compressor.

Re: help me out! a/c compressor question.
$1000 sounds about right for A/C work done the right way. C Ory is right too.
-Evacuate/Recharge
-Cost of additional lbs of freon
-Compressor
-Receiver-Dryer / Accumulator
-Orifice Tube
-Labor
The cheapest way to do it would be to vent the system into the atmosphere, replace the compressor, and then get the system evacuated and recharged. You'd still be looking at about $250-300 for the compressor, and $150-200 for the evac/recharge. Plus no warranty on anything.
Tell the guy you'll give him $200 to repair the AC since he makes it sound so easy.
