i am a state inspector and have never heard of pulling bulbs to check for DOT stamp. It is something that inspector MAY do if they appear to be brighter or dimmer then normal but it is still at inspectors discreation.

i've pulled bulbs before. i did an inspection on a xterra that had clear/blue bulbs at all spots, which is what prompted the check. it clearly states that bulbs must have the DOT stamp for the inspection. the owner, nor the service writer was too pleased w/ it, but i looked it up and asked the other inspectors, all of which said to fail it. if they don't look like factory bulbs, there's atleast a chance that someone's gonna check - specially if its been a bad day/week/etc.

RTFM. section 140-1, in bold it shows that it must have the DOT stamp and manufacturers name. granted, it is almost never checked on every vehicle, but if i pull one in and on light check find a blue tinted bulb, or its really frikkin bright, they are pulled and checked. the sylvania cool blue xenons are an approved type also, since they meet FMVSS standards.

i hate to say it, but the last four cars that i did that to and rejected for were all hondas. for some reason, they are the most popular for people putting blue headlights in :dunno:
