If you put your time and effort into it (and if you have access to a wire brush, some purple power, and a pressure washer) you can make it clean enough to eat off of.

DIY.
The first time (or first couple of times) it will take you a few hours to do it..but, i would suggest you to wash it as part of your weekly routine..It wont take you 10 mins to wash it after the first detail....
I use simple green automobile to remove grease, oil, etc. Simple green is really gentle and it wont harm your paint or your rubber hoses. Use a towel to rub off your hoses (do not use steel brush)....use regular sponge in your hood....use toothbrush in tight spaces and use a harder bristle brush in other parts of the engine......use as many simple green as necessary...hose off regularly so you can see if its all clean....repeat as necessary.
