GLOUCESTER -- Police arrested 11 young adults and two juveniles early Saturday,
after stopping 13 "low-rider" cars racing down Route 17 at speeds approaching
100 mph.
Gloucester Chief Deputy Mike Nicely said the driver of one of the custom low-
slung cars crashed when he broke away from the others after police stopped them
near Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
Deputies found the driver - Cedric Wright, 21, of Newport News - lying in the
road near his wrecked car at the end of Fiddler's Green Road.
Wright was taken to the hospital, where he was examined and released, Nicely
said.
Wright is charged with evading and eluding a police officer and with reckless
driving.
Nicely said that the cluster was stopped after a deputy clocked the cars racing
south from the Woods Cross Roads area shortly after police had been alerted to
the drag racing about 2 a.m.
Others charged with reckless driving and speeding are Preston Brandon, 18, of
Newport News; Demitrus Smith, 22, of Newport News; Tasos Stekas, 21, of
Yorktown; Russell Brady, 26, of Hampton; Michael Mullins, 18, of Newport News;
Mathew Hicks, 21, of Yorktown; Danijel Akaratovic, 19, of Newport News; Timothy
Youngblood, 20, of Newport News; Darryl Jackson, 19, of Hampton; Michael
Newsome, 20, of Newport News; and two 17-year-old Newport News residents - one
a female.
