Buying a VW for DD use
Hey all,
I'm looking at VW golfs. 5spd, GTI or lesser (maybe TDI), and from 92-99'ish with a budget of no more than $2,800. Is there anything in particular these cars are known for maintenance-wise that require any special/annoying attention? I've read they're among the most reliable cars made in Germany. It'll be in my ownership for 2yrs.
Thanks.

Reliable for $2800? Not likely, try to budget in repairs.
I'm driving a 2004 VW Jetta TDI with 155k+ miles on it, about 1k/week. No major problems. Had the timing belt changed, new tires at 120k. That's it. TDI = diesel, so it's getting great highway mileage, which is why I bought it.

the MKIII 2.0L is an AMAZINGLY reliable car. not to mention junkyards where you're at they will be dime a dozen. very very easy to fix anything. now they don't make power, but they are extremely reliable. oh and if you are ever at the junkyard, if you see a cabrio and wouldn't mind grabbing me a trunk lid i'd appricate it

Thanks for the replies. I figured there wasn't anything terrible about them. I'm currently renting a '95 Ford Fiesta and considered buying one, but there are more VW's in junkyards.
No need for power. Just want something compact that starts everyday and gets me A-B with gas mileage. Shoot me a PM on exactly what you need and I'll look, no problem.
